Having decided to start competing with the nightly news programs on ABC, CBS and NBC instead of complementing them, the program expanded to one hour on September 5, 1983,[13] incorporating other changes, such as the introduction of "documentary reportage from the field";[14] it became known at that time as The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour.
