Taiwan, a Democracy in The Shadow of China
Faced with Beijing's hegemonic aims, the Taiwanese are gradually building an astonishing digital democracy. Focus on a policy for the future. "One country, two systems? Never!" The Taiwanese have said loud and clear: they will not accept falling under the control of China, whose coast is located less than 200 kilometers from their island. Because under the aegis of President Xi Jinping, Taiwan is fueling more than ever the greed of its powerful neighbor, who has never recognized its independence and intends to bring it back into its fold, like Hong Kong. To guard against pressure from Beijing, this "de facto" country, with 24 million inhabitants, possessing its flag, its anthem, its currency, its language and its institutions, opposes it with an innovative democracy, driven by digital technology, and which developed at the same time as the Internet.
