Berlin mit der S-Bahn erfahren
The history of the Berlin S-Bahn is closely linked to the history of the city in the 20th century. It was once one of the most modern means of transport in the world. Was more than a transport link, it was a lifeline. After the war, sovereignty over the S-Bahn lay with the GDR Reichsbahn. After the Wall was built, the number of passengers fell and it quickly lost half of its passengers in all of Berlin. Empty trains, official railway systems and a ramshackle vehicle fleet shaped the political situation of the West Berlin S-Bahn. In the east half of the city an increase was recorded over the years because the S-Bahn was expanded in East Berlin. After the fall of the Wall, the route network was renovated and the ring closed again. Today over a million people use this mode of transport again.
