Under the spell of Chernobyl

Under the spell of Chernobyl

Under the spell of Chernobyl is a series by VRT journalist and Russia expert Jan Balliauw about the disaster in the Ukrainian nuclear power plant on 26 April 1986. The series wants to investigate in a rational way why Chernobyl still evokes so many emotions after 34 years. Eyewitnesses tell what they saw and experienced that day, what the consequences of the disaster were on their lives and health, and what myths exist about it. Jan Balliauw also travelled to Belarus, where 70% of the fallout from Chernobyl ended up. There he talks to victims who are still living in contaminated areas. And he also reflects on the legacy of Chernobyl: have the people who were found guilty been rightly punished? What does the disaster mean for the future of nuclear energy? And what will happen to the disaster zone?
