A fictional series freely inspired by the period when Eça de Queiroz was Consul of Portugal in Cuba, at the time a Spanish colony In 1871, the Government fell that banned the Democratic Conferences of Casino Lisbonense, led by Antero de Quental, where Eça de Queiroz intervened. In the following year, Eça is appointed Consul, in Havana, by Andrade Corvo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the new, more liberal Government. In Cuba, a Spanish colony, slavery continues. There are about 100,000 Chinese contractors who leave China through Macau with Portuguese documents. Eça heads to Havana with the task of trying to solve the problem of the Chinese, treated like slaves in the sugar cane plantations. During the time he remains there, Eça does not leave his merits of seducer in the hands of others and lives a sizzling love with Mollie, daughter of American General Bidwell, a modern and passionate young woman who feels as comfortable at the poker table as at seduction game.
