The Faces of the Savannah

The Faces of the Savannah

End of November: The air becomes oppressively humid, thunderstorms sweep across the savannah, heavy rains flood the flood plains. The Luangwa becomes a mighty river. Now even the small waterholes are well filled again. The animals are no longer dependent on the river, they roam the valleys, bring their young to the world. At Luangwa, there is the world's largest Nimmersatt stork colony. The storks return to their ancestral breeding trees as every year. The breeding season also begins for weaver birds and hawksbills. The Luangwa Valley in Zambia is home to countless wild animals. It houses a unique biodiversity - from the smallest insect to impressive hippo, crocodile and elephant populations. The life of the animals is determined by the precipitation. Hot dry seasons and the milder rainy season characterize the savannah landscape with grasslands and scattered bush and tree cover.
