The Thirty Years' War

The Thirty Years' War

The Thirty Years' War has been described as a catastrophe of German history - not least because of its brutality and its duration. What began as a local conflict in Bohemia in 1618 with the Prague lintel developed into a war of hitherto unknown dimensions. All the important powers of Europe were involved in it. It was carried out on German soil, at the expense of the civilian population, and it was said: "the war feeds the war". Huge mercenary armies marched through Germany. And only when the country was completely bled, the annihilation came to an end - 1648 by the Peace of Westphalia. Four hundred years after the outbreak of the war, the new "Terra X" two-parter finds out about so-called ego documents - self-testimonies in which people have written down their personal perceptions, such as diaries and letters - giving new access to the devastating events and reporting it the view of ordinary people.
