Like no other federal state, the land between the Eifel and the Teutoburg Forest, Siebengebirge and Lower Rhine has always been shaped by humans. Many "cultural landscapes" - the heaps under industrial forests, the dredged seascapes on the Lower Rhine - are so familiar to us that the younger ones are often surprised when they learn of their artificial origin.
