A military hero of the War of Reform named Porfirio Díaz was also one of the most important strategists behind the overthrow of the Second Mexican Empire. Several times he tried to come to power through military coups, until a last revolution in 1876 brought him to the Presidency of the Republic. Except for a short period of four years, from 1880 to 1884, he ruled until 1911, when the seizure of power by Francisco I. Madero forced him to resign and go into exile. Diaz lived long enough to see his revolution unravel and all the profits made destroyed by his own very long stay in power. Like a hero or an astute weaver of intrigues, Porfirio Díaz learns, fights, machines, governs, kills, pacifies, loves, suffers, cries and with devotion he dedicates himself to his work and never abandons it, until his own people rebel to expel him from power.
